About Alan

Videographer and designer Alan Murdock is excited to be back in Iowa and collaborating with area creative organizations. A graduate of the University of Iowa, where he earned a BA in Dance (’96) and an MA (98) and MFA(2000) in Intermedia Art with second subjects in drawing and ceramics, Alan is back following 19 years of living in Oregon, Utah and Colorado.

While in Oregon, Alan chaired the Design Management program at The Art Institute of Portland and launched an undergraduate program in Design Research. His programs placed students in leading design and advertising agencies, including Weiden + Kennedy, Frog Design, Nike, Adidas, Big Giant, Nemo Design and Swanson Studio. He produced video for Portland METRO’s education division, documenting musical theater in the schools developed to promote recycling and sustainability. He taught media production to designers and animators while continuing his work in video and design.

After a move to Salt Lake City in 2009, Alan brought together a team of creatives including filmmaker Rhea Monroe, architect and designer Seavash Zohoori and Screenwriter Todd Maetani to lead design and media education at The Art Institute of Salt Lake City. Students collaborated with non-profits to put on fashion and design exhibitions and to work across print, digital and video to create integrated cross media productions.

In 2016 Alan moved to Lafayette Colorado, producing video for Jax Outdoor Gear, AIGA Denver, AIGA Boulder, Convercent, The City of Boulder and the City of Louisville. He became the creative director for Green Vine Marketing in 2017 and continues in that capacity, working remotely from Iowa.

In 2019, Alan moved back to Cedar Rapids Iowa and starting collaborations with area creatives. Alan’s recent collaborations include video and photos projected into the stage space for Ballet Quad Cities Dracula Unleashed, promotional video in support of fundraising for the Iowa Ceramics Center and fundraising and documentary video for performance and ceramics artist Caitlin Mary Margarett.

Alan’s collaboration with Ballet Quad Cities is a return to his early work collaborating on digital design. Projects include media projections for choreography by Amando Duarte, Shouze Ma, Kirsten Kaschock, Rani Welch and Cecil Slaughter, among others.
