Performers develop their craft through a combination of study, practice and experience. All three are necessary. Study is what you do in school and through reading books, watching videos and experiencing critiques. Practice is what you do in rehearsal, in the studio and on stage – the practice of your art, but experience is what you do out in the world. It is engaging with other artists, traveling, participating in shows, seeing and performing for others.

Caitlin Mary Margarett is one of the most driven performers I’ve met since moving back to Iowa. She’s always working, scheduling, writing, social media posting and crafting her next work. Though she is driven to create work in and about Iowa and the Midwest, she is also vitally aware of her work within a national and international scope.

Her work is driven by the social humanist performance actions in the vein of Joseph Beuys and the German school, which combines performative actions with object creation and the imbuing of objects with social meaning. On a trip to Germany Caitlin Mary Margarett saw and experienced a number of projects that are drawing her back, hopefully to lay the groundwork for postgraduate study and/or a Fulbright scholarship. Toward that, she is preparing a performance/study/tour in summer 2020.

In December I visited her studio and shot a video about her work and her process in preparing to travel this summer.

So far, the fundraising has been going well. Caitlin Mary Margarett posted an update to her Facebook page that she is half way to her goal!

I encourage you to support her trip. Hers is the kind of work we need to see in Iowa – socially responsible, understanding of the environmental stewardship necessary to protect the environment and the future of human life on the planet, and aesthetically powerful.
